26. August 2024 – Our much-anticipated bicycle tour kicked off in the picturesque city of Innsbruck, the capital of Tyrol, Austria. With the sun gently rising over the Alps, we set out on our journey, energized by the crisp morning air and the promise of adventure that lay ahead. This first leg of our tour took us through charming towns, along the banks of the River Inn, and into the heart of Tyrol’s stunning landscapes. The day was a perfect blend of natural beauty, cultural richness, and physical challenge, making it an unforgettable start to our journey.

The Start: Innsbruck to Schwaz

We began our tour in Innsbruck, a city known for its imperial architecture and surrounded by towering alpine peaks. As we pedaled out of the city, we were treated to views of the majestic Nordkette mountain range. The route took us along the Inn River, which would be our companion for much of the day.

Our first major stop was Schwaz, a town with a rich mining history dating back to the Middle Ages. Once known as the “Silver Town,” Schwaz was a center of European mining in the 15th century. We took a brief pause here to explore the town’s historical charm, visiting the old mining museum and the Gothic parish church, one of the largest of its kind in Austria. The town’s blend of history and modernity provided a unique backdrop for our journey.

Through Wörgl: A Blend of Tradition and Progress

Leaving Schwaz, we continued our journey towards Wörgl. This stretch of the route was particularly scenic, with the road winding through lush green valleys and offering stunning views of the surrounding mountains. The ride was challenging at times, with some uphill sections that tested our endurance, but the breathtaking views made every effort worthwhile.

Wörgl, a bustling town known for its innovative spirit, marked the midpoint of our day. The town is famous for its experiment with a local currency during the Great Depression, a testament to its progressive outlook. We didn’t linger long here, but the town’s energy and its mix of traditional Tyrolean culture with modern influences were palpable as we cycled through.

Arrival in Kufstein: A Town Steeped in History

As the day wore on, we arrived in Kufstein, a historic town nestled on the banks of the Inn River, near the German border. The town is dominated by the Kufstein Fortress, an imposing structure that dates back to the 13th century. We couldn’t resist taking a short detour to explore the fortress, which offers panoramic views of the town and the surrounding landscape.

Kufstein’s old town, with its narrow streets and colorful houses, was a delightful place to explore. The atmosphere here was serene, a perfect contrast to the physical exertion of the day. As we walked our bikes through the cobblestone streets, we felt a deep connection to the history and culture of this beautiful region.

Overnight in Ebbs: Rest and Rejuvenation at Hotel Oberwirt

Our first day’s journey concluded in the charming village of Ebbs, just a few kilometers from Kufstein. Here, we checked into the Hotel Oberwirt, a traditional Tyrolean inn that provided the perfect setting for a restful night. After a long day of cycling, the hotel’s warm hospitality and comfortable accommodations were exactly what we needed to recharge.

We enjoyed a hearty Tyrolean dinner, featuring local specialties. The hotel’s cozy atmosphere, coupled with the stunning views of the surrounding mountains, made it an ideal place to relax and prepare for the challenges of the next day.

Reflection and Anticipation

As we settled in for the night, we reflected on the day’s journey. From the historic streets of Schwaz to the bustling energy of Wörgl, and the serene beauty of Kufstein, the first leg of our bicycle tour had been everything we hoped for and more. We felt a deep sense of accomplishment, having covered so much ground and experienced so much of Tyrol’s rich culture and natural beauty.

With our spirits high and our bodies rested, we looked forward to the next day’s adventures. The road ahead promised more stunning landscapes, challenging rides, and unforgettable experiences. But for now, we rested, content in the knowledge that the journey had only just begun.
